In
some ways, the social consensus for the Newton community is delicate. The
group faces some significant challenges. External forces (the market,
friends, family and colleagues) make the device difficult to use in both a
pragmatic and symbolic sense. Moreover, this is an entirely
consumer-sustaining reality as there is little to no participation by the
marketer. Apple is only mentioned for previous behaviors regarding the
Newton. Namely, doing a poor job of marketing the device and then
discontinuing it altogether.
