Copilot is the term that Microsoft uses for its AI tools and services. This can be a little confusing, given the various products using similar names (GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Copilot Pro, Copilot for Microsoft 365, Copilot for Finance, Copilot for Power Platform, Copilot for Sales, Copilot for Security, Copilot for Service, etc.). Microsoft Copilot is a free service that provides access to GPT-4 and DALL-E 3.

In September, 2024, Microsoft started retiring Copilot With Commercial Data Protection and replacing this service with the new Microsoft Copilot with Enterprise Data Protection. This has changed the additional protections that were highlighted on this page.

For up-to-date information, please refer to Microsoft’s documentation.

Logging into Microsoft Copilot with your DePaul credentials activates “Commercial Data Protection.”

You should see this message on screen - “Your personal and company data are protected in this chat.” This provides you with important additional protections:

• Chat data is not saved.
• Chat data is not used to train AI models.
• Citations accompany generated textual content.

Here is how you access Microsoft Copilot:

Download/open the Microsoft Edge web browser and login with your DePaul Bluekey credentials:

1. In Edge, click on the Profile icon.
2. Click on Sign in.
3. Type in your BlueM@il email address.
4. Select work account (not personal).
5. Type in your BlueM@il email password.

When chatting with Microsoft Copilot, you have the choice of one of three conversational styles:

1. Creative: Slower. For new or longer content. Uses GPT-4.
2. Balanced: The default setting. Fastest of the three, and best for most common tasks.
3. Precise: More factual. Uses GPT-4.

Additionally, if using the Copilot app (and again logging in with DePaul credentials) you can specifically ask to use GPT4

Using the Edge browser, you can open files and then use Copilot to interact with the document. For example, I can open a PDF which Copilot can then summarize, rewrite, or answer questions about in chat.

Microsoft suggests some example Copilot prompts that you might want to try out:

• Improve the way you study: 'Give me a quiz to see what I remember about enzyme kinetics for biochemistry' or 'If I paste in my syllabus, can you help me develop a study plan?' or 'Ask me questions to help me study for my upcoming computer science exam.'
• Take better and more efficient notes: 'Summarize the latest World Trade Report from the WTO' or 'If I paste in my lecture notes, can you identify the key ideas and give me some mnemonics to help me remember each topic?'
• Improve your writing: 'If I paste in a draft of my essay, can you help me revise it?' or 'Help me brainstorm for an essay on Okun's law for my macroeconomics course.'
• Manage stress: 'How can I track my progress this semester and adjust my plans as needed?' or 'If I list all the things I need to do this week, can you help me break them down into manageable tasks?'
