"For a better tomorrow"
Project Literacy in
Amauzari Nigeria is focused on bringing educational tools that will assist in
educating both the young and old of Amauzari Nigeria. The hope is that P.L.A.N.
will expand to other villages and small towns in Nigeria.
OBJECTIVES
- Provide access to different
ideas and the ability to expand their horizons through creating libraries,
internet access and developing computer skills.
- Create scholarship awards
for students who are unable to attend school due to poverty
- Fund-raising to: repair
schools, provide proper seating, provide clean places to learn and play, help
increase teachers' knowledge, provide lunches at the school, improve truancy
and providing skill acquiring programs for the elderly or the widowed.
WHY?
- Nigeria's economy is
decaying every day. Providing for one's family is a struggle made by most
day to day. People are not educated and so they resort to other unethical
ways to provide for their families. It has been my experience that when someone
is thoroughly educated they are able to come up with more inventive ideas.
- Nigerian families should
not be dependent on overseas relatives. It places a burden on both the individual
in need and the relative.
- Ignorance is rarely
valuable or helpful in a society and often is more dangerous than not.
- Nigeria is a country
rich in resources and once educated could contribute as a key player in the
world today.
- Groupthink is occurring
in Nigeria. Nigerians lack the ability to see beyond their front door and
therefore lack innovation.
- Children are the best
candidates. Youth provides them the ability to change, imagination, un-attachment
to move out in the world and take chances.
WHY AMAUZARI?
On my travels to Nigeria
I have spent majority of my time in the village of Amauzari. It is there that
I made these observations:
There are three targeted schools: Central School, Salvation Army school and
St. Theresa School classes are divided into A & B units from primary 1 through
primary 6. There are approximately thirty students in each class. Chalkboards
are dusty slates. There are Pot-holes in the floor. Students are not always
present in school. Soccer is a sport children enjoy. Children are friendly and
eager to learn. A large percentage of adults are promoting unethical behavior
and are un-educated. However education is essential and recommended. The morale
to educate is high in the community but the tools to properly educate are unavailable.
Library contains one bookshelf and a basket of books. Students learn English,
Igbo, Reading, and Math. They do not learn Science, Social Studies, History,
Geography or Religion. Also no music classes but they do have chorus. Students
take turns cleaning classrooms. Instructors are sometimes not present. No lunches
provided for the children. Rooms are dark. Classroom windows are open, no proper
doors for security. Students wear uniforms. School starts at 8 AM. Students
may not have fees. Students may not have fees which results in high truancy
rate. Students start school at the age of three.
HOW?
- My time frame is four
years for marking of successful implementation. This would start as of January
2004 and extend to January 2008.
- I will be working with
a team of the brightest students in Illinois at DePaul University within an
organization known as S.I.F.E. Students in free enterprise.
- I will also be working
with the National Amauzari People in the United States. I will attempt to
receive tax-deductible donations from libraries, schools, and businesses.
- To notate any change
in society will be a 10 year process. Changes in society will be noted by
keeping in contact with key people in the community and visits.
